Visualize Vectors: Head-to-Tail Addition
Struggling to add vectors? Forget complex calculations! There's a visual trick that makes it super easy to understand vector addition.
Subject: mechanics • Classes: 6–12 • Difficulty: basic (6-8)
The Trick
The 'Head-to-Tail' method is a visual way to add vectors. Imagine each vector as an arrow. To add vector A to vector B: 1. Draw vector A. 2. Starting at the HEAD of vector A, draw vector B. 3. The resultant vector (A + B) is an arrow drawn from the TAIL of vector A to the HEAD of vector B. This works because it represents displacement. Moving along A, then along B, is the same as moving along the resultant vector. This holds true for any number of vectors!
